Author's Note: This is in response to the first chapter of the book which I read the last couple of nights. I haven't really dug into the details but in the beginning of the book, the main character is getting married so I wanted to do something joyful and more of a romantic poem plotline. I was thinking more of a poem style because it seemed ideal for this piece that I wanted to write. Please leave feedback.
"The Song of the Ages"
The sun rises
in the sky so blue
with roses budding
and spring coming
As I open my eyes
I see nothing but beauty
As nature is flourishing
with every little drop of water
As I walk outside
the leaves start to bloom
and the grass sways
as if it's dancing
with the beat of my heart
keeping the rythm
of the song
played by the birds
And the plants
are green as can be
while the trees
laugh in the wind
And a song starts to play
in the forest of love
as I march forward
toward the stream of joy
As everything leaps
and the whole forest sings
I join in
to this great song
with the birds
singing the melody
and the trees
keeping the beat
with all of the plants
keeping our pace
and the grass
having much grace
The other animals in the forest
join in with the melody
as I sing my solo
of complete joy
and as I walk
towards that stream
with the whole forest
singing behind me
I feel the sudden joy
of being alive
and the last line of the song passes
but we do it all again.
This is an odd response seeing that the whole marriage was a purchase; Wang Lung buys O-lan. There is no romance or love as we know it involved in this exchange. Reflect on how the end of that chapter affected you. What do you make of that?
