As people, we naturally fear death. When we think of death, we usually put it into the idea of a dark, gloomy day where there is no happiness. Sadness overcomes our life. But what would life be like without death? It would be a pointless life. Without death, there is no meaning to life. With death, we have a sense of urgency because we know that one day, we won’t have the opportunity to do the things that we want to accomplish in life. We go to a state in which death is really something to fear but at the same time, it is something that we could not live without.
In the book Life of Pi, there is that idea that without death, there would be no point in life. When Pi is on the boat, he could easily just die, just give up on life, but with death, he realizes that if he sacrifices the life that he has, all of his potential that he has to change the world will drown with his body in the sea. With every day that he passes on that life boat, he realizes that it might be his last but fights for it to be anything but his last. Without death, there is no point in a sense of urgency to get off the life boat. But with death lingering, he realizes that he has something yet to do with his life. With death, we realize that people have a purpose to fulfill and with death still waiting to strike, there are more things to do in the life that we try to live to the fullest every day.
With all of the terror in the journey of Pi, he never stop going except for sleeping. With this sense of hope in him, he takes death in perspective and takes reality and puts it in tact. He thinks as though he needs to keep himself alive because no one else will. The only person who can save him is himself. If he lies down and lets death take over him, he will not have the feeling of gratitude but rather the feeling of emptiness. What really makes him keep thinking and keep going is the fear of death. We fear death as if though it is some kind of evil demon. Is death the real demon, or is it birth? Without birth, there would be no death. Without death, life would be filled with emptiness and there would be no point to anything in life.
With all of the ideas swirling around death, death shouldn’t be a fear to us. And if we do, why do we fear it? It is a part of life and actually is one of the essentials to life. Without death, life would be pointless in so many different ways. Since there is no death, nothing bad can ever happen to life. There is none of the necessary pain that is needed in life. It’s just like Nietzche’s quote. With death, you feel pain. But without death, there is no possible pain to feel. If death is absent, there really is no such thing as pain. Pain is necessary and without death, there would be no point in anything. There would be no enjoyment to life because you would have nothing to live for. Life would be an endless circle of “joy.” Without pain, we wouldn’t even know what joy is. Since it is part of our daily routine, it would just be considered normal to us. Without death, life would be black and white and would have absolutely no meaning to it.
Without death, there would be absolutely no point in life. You would just keep living a life of nothing because you have no deadline. You have no deadline as to when you stop living. There is no real purpose to it. We have nothing to go for. No goal to reach for or no ladder to climb because there is nothing to climb. Without death, there would be no point to life.
Author's Note - This entry has to do with a description and respect between a teacher and his former student. The teacher, Mr. Kumar, is an atheist which means he doesn't believe in a God. In this entry, I kind of include the idea of the world as a whole. There is a lot of symbolism in this but I left it out and kind of described what it said in the book. Please leave questions of comments.
Mr. Kumar and Pi's respect seems to flourish for each other. It seems odd at times since they have completely different beliefs. Mr. Kumar is an atheist which Pi describes in how he looks. He says he looks like two triangles, a bigger with a smaller on top of it, with these two triangles, balanced on two parallel lines. No how does this influence the beliefs of the two? It creates controversy but also creates a good bonding relationship. All friends need to fight. Nobody is perfect and can sit and stare at the world and say they have never been in a debate or fight. This goes hand in hand with Dante's Inferno piece. The worst people in the world are not the people who did good or bad, but did nothing. Without controversy, we would be nothing as a whole. We would know nothing and anything everyone would say would be right.
We also have to remember that shapes are part of geometry. Geometry is a math symbol and math is essentially the same thing as science and science is also a symbol of an atheist. We usually don't go this deep in religion. There is a respect in between the two. Pi and Mr. Kumar can debate, but realize that they are both going for the same goal. To prove themselves right. The only difference is what they're fighting for, and how they go about proving their statement. This is what they need. Yann Martel describes what a successful friendship and in the bigger picture, a country to be successful. It's not necessary to fight all the time but there are times to fight. But the key to controversy, is not taking it to the next level of fighting and to solve the problem being debated. Humans lack of this. They either lack the effect of their words being spoken and to prove themselves right. Others lack the necessary idea to choose one side of the other and eventually, they resolve to a fight. These are the people that have gotten their countries into doubt and the place where America is today.
Cover for the Rain
Author's Note: This was inspired by a part from the recent chapters of the book. The rain is pouring down and he puts the tarpaulin over the lifeboat and covers himself from the rain. That's not what came to me when I read that though. I thought of daily life and how we try to seclude ourselves from the world at times. This part really spoke to me and I hope you enjoy. Comments and feedback are greatly appreciated.
Pi acts in the lifeboat, are as those of a lonely person on the street. In the book, when it starts to rain, he covers the whole boat with the tarpaulin and is protected from the rain. But what he really is doing is just putting himself in more danger. He is secluding himself from the world. He is breaking ties with everything that we know and hiding from what is real. He covers the whole boat, and is in a land of questions, with no answers.
Seclusion is something that we don't think of too much but is part of us. Whether we realize it or not, we seclude ourselves from the outside world a lot. We don't like the exposure so we go to a happy place that is so fake, that reality is little to none. When we get mad at our parents and lock ourselves in our room, we are secluding ourselves from the world. We don't want a part of what is real. We are sad and lonely and need that get away place to feel joy instead of sadness and when we finally become happy, we are ready to face reality yet again.
We lose a grip of reality when we go into a state of hiding. We do not expose ourselves to the world because we are afraid. We are not ready to face the world yet. We have yet to make that choice of when to really expose ourselves to the open world. Usually, we don't even make that choice because it is too big of a responsibility for us and leave it up to someone else to make it for us. We are slaves to the world and all of its good and bad. And when this happens, we go into that state of fantasy. It's the place where nothing can go wrong. Even though the world and our life is going about its usual manner, our mind is in a completely different place when we go to a new place. Our own world where what happens there is what we want to happen. We only scratch the surface of reality and take the bits and pieces of real life that we like, and put it into our fantasy world.
Seclusion is not bad, but if we have too much of it, it takes away from what is real. It is what leads to insanity. If we go into the state of seclusion too often, we think of that as the real world and the Truth. If we seclude ourselves from reality too much, we never get exposed to what is real and think that what is fake, is really reality. We see only a speck of what is real, and take what is fake, and cover reality up. Pi is in this state and is in the place that he wants to be and secludes himself from the world but too much will make him go insane.
